The players have to beat the two bosses, one “rival” boss and one central boss, following an era.

Defeating every boss provides the player with emerald chaos[b] and, after the game is over, both Sonics can become super shaped by 50 rings collected in the average level.

It offers two gameplay styles: “Classic,” which is a side scroll-like Sega Genesis Sonic and “Modern” 3D, comparable to Sonic Unleashed (2008) & Sonic Colors (2010).
